Whispers in Wax—An Encaustic Solo Exhibition by Shu-Chen, HUNG
This exhibition presents artist Shu-Chen HUNG’s profound creative exploration through the ancient Western art of encaustic painting, interwoven with Eastern philosophical thought. Beginning with reflections drawn from her own life experiences, Shu-Chen echoes the aesthetic belief that places “experience” at the heart of art, distilling her inquiries into Yogācāra thought and the essence of existence into a tangible visual language.
The exhibition encompasses both two-dimensional and three-dimensional works, moving beyond the boundaries of the traditional picture frame. Through layering, building, and scraping natural beeswax, shellac, and sculpted beeswax flowers, Shu-Chen creates dimensional textures that hover between painting and sculpture. The recurring image of the honeycomb symbolizes the “original state” underlying the myriad forms of all things. However their outward forms may change, they ultimately return to the same source: pure beeswax. Through the warm yet resilient qualities of these materials, Shu-Chen creates a contemplative space where time seems to settle and an inner dialogue unfolds. The works invite viewers to look beyond the surface of the material world and discover the quiet message within: all things share a common origin, and all return to the true self.
